Vehicle Description
Chassis No. 6549 | Pininfarina Body No. 115 | 31,300 Miles
This is our 1965 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Series I, chassis number 6549, finished in Verde Metallico over Cuoio Naturale leather upholstery and showing 31,300 miles. Originally delivered through Luigi Chinetti Motors in January 1965, this example retains its original numbers-matching V12 engine and benefits from an extensive three-year restoration completed in 2020 at a reported cost of approximately $105,000. According to research by Ferrari historian Marcel Massini, chassis 6549 was originally finished in Verde Pino over Pelle Arancia leather, making its present green exterior a return to a color family closely associated with the car's original factory specification.
Introduced at the 1964 Brussels Motor Show, the Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 succeeded the 250 GT 2+2, offering increased displacement, improved refinement, and updated Pininfarina coachwork. Its Colombo-derived 3,967cc V12 engine produced approximately 300 horsepower, paired in this example with a four-speed manual transmission featuring overdrive. The Series I is distinguished by its quad-headlamp front end, a design later replaced by conventional dual headlamps with the introduction of the Series II.
According to the historical report prepared by Marcel Massini, chassis 6549 was completed at the Ferrari factory on December 1, 1964, wearing Verde Pino (19404 M) over Pelle Arancia (VM 3104) leather. The car was constructed with left-hand drive for the American market and assigned Pininfarina body number 115. It was delivered new to Luigi Chinetti Motors in January 1965, beginning its history in the United States.
By the early 1990s, chassis 6549 had made its way to California and had been refinished in red. In 1996, the Ferrari was acquired by a Washington state collector, who subsequently replaced the wire wheels with alloy wheels, commissioned another exterior repaint, and had the interior reupholstered in tan leather.
Following nearly two decades of ownership, chassis 6549 relocated to Southern California in 2014, where it subsequently underwent an extensive restoration by Rex Nguyen Restorations of Los Angeles. Completed in 2020, the three-year project reportedly totaled approximately $105,000, addressing both the Ferrari's cosmetic presentation and several important mechanical systems.
As part of the restoration, the body was refinished in Verde Metallico, an elegant shade of green that complements the distinctive Pininfarina coachwork. The exterior brightwork was polished or refurbished as necessary, while the cabin was completely retrimmed in Connolly Cuoio Naturale leather, complemented by period-correct carpeting, vinyl, and trunk materials. The restoration also included work to the braking, exhaust, and cooling systems, along with the installation of new front springs and an engine tune-up.
Importantly, chassis 6549 retains its original numbers-matching V12 engine, with corresponding chassis and engine stampings documented in previous auction records. The car's original factory specification also included the four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive, a defining mechanical feature of the early Series I automobiles.
In August 2023, chassis 6549 was offered through RM Sotheby's at Monterey, where it was acquired by its current owner, a private collector residing in the Midwest. It has since remained part of a collection of significant European and American automobiles.
With its documented factory history, original U.S. delivery through Luigi Chinetti Motors, numbers-matching V12 engine, and extensive restoration completed in 2020, chassis 6549 represents a particularly attractive example of the Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Series I. Its Verde Metallico exterior, Cuoio Naturale leather interior, and distinctive quad-headlamp Pininfarina coachwork combine to create an elegant interpretation of Ferrari's classic V12 grand touring formula.
