Vehicle Description
This is our 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Coupe, finished in Silver Grey Metallic over Dark Brown leather upholstery and showing 23,815 miles. Originally delivered as a European-market example and imported to the United States during the 1980s, this W111 coupe is one of approximately 3,270 examples produced between 1969 and 1971. Equipped with the desirable 3.5-liter V8, four-speed automatic transmission, and factory sunroof, this example benefits from extensive mechanical servicing completed in 2024, along with previous cosmetic refurbishment. Its elegant pillarless coupe bodywork, distinctive low-profile grille, and rich Dark Brown leather interior represent the understated sophistication of Mercedes-Benz grand touring automobiles of the era.
Introduced in 1969, the Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Coupe represented the final evolution of the W111 coupe series and was among the first Mercedes-Benz passenger cars equipped with the newly developed M116 V8 engine. The 3.5-liter V8 produced approximately 200 horsepower and 211 lb-ft of torque, delivering improved performance and refinement over the earlier six-cylinder models. The 280SE 3.5 was also distinguished by its lower, wider grille design, commonly referred to as the Flachkühler or "low-grille" configuration. Produced in relatively limited numbers, these V8-powered coupes remain among the most recognizable Mercedes-Benz grand touring automobiles of the postwar period.
Originally finished in Beige Grey Metallic (paint code 728), this example was subsequently refinished in its present Silver Grey Metallic exterior in 2018. During that time, portions of the exterior brightwork were re-chromed, and the interior wood trim was refurbished. The car retains its elegant pillarless coupe design, complemented by a factory sunroof, wraparound rear window, front vent windows, dual side mirrors, and US-specification headlights.
The interior is upholstered in Dark Brown leather, providing a rich contrast to the Silver Grey Metallic exterior. The cabin features individual front seats, a rear bench, wood trim extending across the dashboard and A-pillars, and a classic two-spoke steering wheel with chrome horn ring. Additional appointments include a Becker AM/FM radio, dashboard-mounted clock, three-point front seatbelts, and a heater. The Becker radio was previously rebuilt, and the heater control levers were replaced. Notably, this example was produced without factory air conditioning, retaining its original non-A/C configuration. Cracking is present along the upper portion of the rear seat.
Mechanically, the car is powered by its 3.5-liter M116 V8 engine featuring Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection, paired with a four-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. The suspension consists of an independent double-wishbone front arrangement with coil springs and a rear single-joint swing axle, complemented by power steering and four-wheel power-assisted disc brakes.
A substantial amount of mechanical servicing was completed in 2024, addressing several major systems throughout the vehicle. The braking system received a rebuilt brake booster and calipers, along with replacement of the master cylinder, brake pads, rotors, and hoses. Additional chassis work included a new steering coupler, wheel bearings, tie rod assemblies, and shock absorbers.
Engine-related servicing included re-coring the radiator and replacing the battery, engine mounts, valve cover gaskets, hood insulation pad, drive belts, fan clutch, radiator and heater hoses, thermostat, fuel filter and hoses, fuel-level sending unit, spark plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor, and ignition points.
The four-speed automatic transmission was also serviced, receiving a replacement filter, pan gasket, transmission mount, and cooler hoses. A Timevalve stainless steel exhaust system was installed during the same period, while the trunk seal and antenna were also replaced.
The car rides on its correct 14-inch steel wheels with factory-style full wheel covers, featuring color-matched centers and fitted with 205/70 Hankook Kinergy ST tires installed in 2024.
With its European-market origins, desirable 3.5-liter V8, factory sunroof, elegant Silver Grey Metallic and Dark Brown color combination, and extensive mechanical servicing completed in 2024, this 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Coupe represents an attractive example of one of Mercedes-Benz's most celebrated postwar grand touring automobiles. Its distinctive pillarless bodywork, classic interior appointments, and refined V8 powertrain continue to embody the craftsmanship and understated elegance associated with the W111 series.
